RENEE' TO STAR IN "ARK"

The Leading online entertainment distributor, 60Frames, and leading independent comic book publisher, Oni Press, are joining forces to create original franchise properties that will simultaneously launch as web series and traditional, digest-sized comics.

Thia will be a first of its kind between independent graphic novel publishers and new media financiers, the two companies will also work to create web series based on select Oni Press' upcoming and existing library titles. Ark, Men With Guns; Assassin are the first projects being developed through the partnership.

'Ark', staring Renee' O'Connor, is an original science-fiction series created by Robbie Thompson and developed by television showrunners Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah. The live action web series follows a young woman who wakes up in a coffin-like capsule and quickly discovers that she is in fact on a large spacecraft. The series will explore how and why she got there, and more importantly, how, and if, she can get home. Both the web series and a companion comic version are slated to launch in early 2009.

NEWS RELEASE: 12:00 AM - 11 AUG 08

O'Connor Boards Web Ark - "It's A Wrap"

'Monster Ark' star Renee O'Connor told SCI FI Wire that "she's wrapped production on a similarly named SF series for the Internet". 'Ark', will combines live action and computer animation.

In 'Ark', O'Connor (Xena: Warrior Princess) plays Connie, a young woman who awakens on a spaceship in a pod that resembles a coffin. She has to determine why and how she is on the ship and whether or not she can return home.

'Ark' is the Internet TV show that I just finished for Judah-Sachs, the show runners for the Beverly Hills 90210 show coming up," O'Connor said during an Aug. 6 conference call, referring to producers Jeff Judah and Gabe Sachs, who developed the show with creator Robbie Thompson (Jericho). "That has a sci-fi element, but this woman, she's a heroine. She's a schoolteacher, and she is a survivor, and I love characters like that."

O'Connor--who has also ventured into writing, producing and directing--also confirmed that she's submitted several ideas to SCI FI Channel. "I can't really talk about that right now," O'Connor said with a laugh when asked if she's working on anything at the moment.

The independent comic publisher Oni Press and 60Frames will launch Ark as print comic books and a Web-based series next year. --Ian Spelling

There is a double page photo of Renne' and an interview in the June 20th issue of NZ Next Magazine.
The road to Muriwai Beach is as Kiwi as Auckland gets. The buildings look like they've stretched out a bit; made themselves at home. Equal room is given to trees and weeds, and the fruit shops are tucked away into every gravel-covered corner.

And the road to Renee O'Connor's place is as Kiwi as Muriwai Beach gets. Iron sands glimmer in the distance and nikau palms point the way to a kinhfisher in a cabbage tree. "He's been here since we moved in. My host says, sinking into a deck chair. Nursing a cup of Bell tea, Renee's soft Texas drawl is the only thing saving me from an overdose of Kiwiana.

Whether the diminutive actress is defined as a sweet little Texan, or as leather-bound, sword-wielding Gabrielle of the 90's TV show Xena: Warrior Princess depends on who you are talking to. And where.
If you are out and about with the blond in West Auckland, say, you'd find people would go for the Gabrielle option, then refuse to believe the nod of confirmation,"because there's no leather and I'm standing in a supermarket line". But if you were in Renee's main base, Los Angeles, people would call her well probably nothing actually. "People are too cool to acknowledge you there." She laughs.

Renee' 37, is in a carefree mood, barefoot and makeup free, she's clearly a long, long way from Hollywood right now. But even in LA, she's un-Hollywood she says. "I don't even ware makeup much" she tells me, before admitting, "but I do love to buy it. Mi daughter Iris is obsessed with it - 'lippy' was her first word.

Iris, two and Renee's son Miles, six. Have taken precedence since Renee's days of defending the world from the dark forces. With her divorce from New Zealand restaurant manager Steve Muir to contend with, she wanted to turn her focus to being a mother. But the decision wasn't without problems.

"I'd been driven so do long that to step back and have kids caused a bit of loss of identity." she says. "After a while I realized if I'm not being who I am as an artistic person, I'm not being a good role model."

So Renee' expanded her creative career to encompass acting, producing and painting, sometimes using the latter endeavor to fund the first two. Selling paintings at Xena conventions may seem an unusual way to source film funding, but it's in sync with the rest of the Diamonds ans Guns' production process. Renee' learned a lot about producing during this three-and-a-half year movie project and it was also where she met her current partner and Iris's father, Jed Sura.

The comedy, about a Kiwi girl who goes husband shopping in Las Vegas in order to aviod deportation, also came about in an unorthodox way. "I ran into Helena Beaven, who worked with me in Xena, at a function at the New Zealand Consulate," Says Renee'. "She was so frustrated with working in LA; there were no parts for her, so she made her own. I was attracted to he because of that."

There have other professional adventures including time in North Carolina filming the 2007 western Ghost Town, and a trip to Bulgaria where her recent movie Genesis Code was set. Watching a clip from the film, it looks like Renee' views acting like riding a bike - she's been doing it so long it's second nature. The actress started out on The Mickey Mouse Club. "I don't remember if I did ever did meet Britney," she says of her fellow MMC alumna.

But her real-live childhood couldn't have been more different from her time on the Disney set. "My mother married my stepfather when I was only two years old and my brother was five." Renee' says. She was in that marriage for 16 years and the whole time the three of us lived in a frightful world which was rife with domestic violence. We were all too scared to leave the situation."

Renee's trying to help other who have been abused , working with the Richstone Family Center in LA. Clearly charity work is good for the soul, but so too is horsing around with one of your best mates. Her six-year stint in New Zealand produced strong friendships, including one with Lucy Lawless, who played Xena. "I only see her about twice a year, but I feel like a version of a sister who I can call any time."

"What a blessing that show was," Renee' says of Xena. "A duo of women, protectors of the innocent? To have my background and play someone like that was profound."

Other people Renee' can call on include the 'Rent-a-Crowd"; the name her Kiwi group of friends gave themselves because they turn up at each other's everything. Luckily Renee' is equally conversant in her native and adoptive tongues. "I still have all the Texan in me - all the 'y'alls' - but now the 'cheers' and 'giddays' are who I am."

If you don't believe her ... well I just would. Renee's Kiwi heritage may be adopted but, but it's a heritage she's prepared to defend. "I had a fight with a tree guy this morning to save that kauri over there," she say, pointing to a stately roadside native. "I guess I'm a California tree hugger at heart." 

Renee at Home In Muriwai Beach New Zealand

image

Muriwai Beach is a beautiful coastal community of 2,000 people located on the west coast of North island and is one of the most ruggedly, picturesque wilderness in New Zealand located within a 30 minute drive west from Auckland City. It is known for its spectacular black volcanic sand beaches, great surfing, fantastic scenery and home to one of New Zealand's largest colony of gannets. Renee's home sits on a bluff overlooking Maori Bay. The noble beast Renee' is on was provided by
Muriwai Beach Riding Center and the photo was taken by Calli for the June 20, 08 issue of NEXT Magazine.

And from the air looking down on Ren's home.

"It's such a beautiful country, New Zealand. It's one of the most serene, gorgeous places I've ever been to. I was thinking about this just the other day because it's not an overwhelming sense of a religious kind of feeling but the country is so incredibly gorgeous and beautiful you almost don't see to look anywhere else but to sit and enjoy what's in front of you so, I think that's definitely one of the highlights of being in that environment. It's peaceful to me and it's something that I hold very dear to my heart and always want to go back and recreate that feeling."

The following review should not contain spoilers. This review is only meant to discusses structure; storyline; production / direction; the cast and their ability to execute their role.

MONSTER ARK (2008)
First of all, it is a good story and that is a must for any good film. It pleasurized both the 'Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark' and 'The Da Vinci Code' but what the hell, if you are going to steal a little ... steal from the best. If Harrison Ford had played the role of Nicholas with Renee' as Ava, and if George Lucas had directed with a big budget ... it would have been one hell of a film earning hundreds of millions right now. As it is ... it was still a damn good movie and Renee' was outstanding (And folks, that may the first time I have ever said something nice about a Sci-fi movie).

THE FILM'S STRUCTURE AND STORYLINE:
Much of this movie deals with historical facts as they are known today and I have always believed that history is only as accurate as the memory of the scribes who first report it and the ensuing years of translations. For religious reasons, various individuals have, at times, withheld and altered certain historical facts to suit their purpose and we now know that at least two books were either lost or edited out of the bible by the early church. Written history should always be viewed with that in mind and we must always be aware that new discoveries will continue to change history as science becomes more exacting and this movie plays to that belief.

The movie had a well structured story line, it had a well thought-out story outline and they stuck to that outline. It never wandered and the suspense factor was always there to tantalize you. The guardians of Noah's tomb are straight out of the Da Vinci Code and the Lost Ark, however, so were other things in this movie. The fact that Ava was, by birth, a guardian of Noah's tomb is a straight lift from the Da Vinci code and the
Prieuré Notre Dame de Sion who were the guardians of Mary Magdalene's grave site and decedents of Jesus Christ.

THE FILMS PRODUCTION / DIRECTION:

The action in the film was limited, for the most part, to a desert area in Iraq so the rock quarry outside of Sofia served it well. The house and church compound also blended into the story line so as far as selecting a location to shoot, their choice would be hard to surpass. The costumes were athletic for the setting, and this time the extras were not a burden on the story. One of them didn't know how to hold a weapon ... but I am sure most people didn't notice that. Some of the scene changes were a bit abrupt and I blame that on the people who handled the cutting and editing as well as the fact it was a low budget film. My only strong complaint is with the special effects department. Like come on guys, take a close look at that thing you call a monster and then go back and try it again. It looked like a giant Texas horny toad wearing body armor!

THE CAST:
Well, first let's start with the reason we all love to stop and smell the roses. Renee' was fantastic! For her, acting is like riding a bicycle or chewing gum. Once she mastered the art, she never forget how.
Ava, as her part was written, is a somewhat smug, self-righteous, uptight bitch (sorry but that was her role). Now we all love Renee' from Xena, and the fact that she can turn herself (as Ava) into a rather obnoxious person, to me was impressive . As an actor, if you can make a die hard fan like myself totally forget the role that brought you fame, folks, that's talent and that's the reason she is such a great actor. And, as she is given deeper roles, she will only become better.

I thought some of her written dialog was a bit clipped ... meaning the dialog could have been written so that it allowed her further clarification for emotional effect ... but that was not her fault and she handled what she was given very well. It was true for both her and Tim DeKay so that was either the fault of the writer or the director ... and/or both. Also, you have to understand that as a writer, I am very picky about that. It's what I call creating and maintaining an emotional "flow". I had never seen Tim before so I cannot compare him with past performances. I thought he did a very good job, but I also felt he rushed some of his lines and again clipped some statements which caused him to lose the effect and flow of the moment. I mean there were times he should have paused ... as if he were studying his thoughts before he belted out the line. Like a fine wine ... you want to sip it ... not slug it down like a glass of warm beer. All he had to do was watch Renee'. Her eyes and her body would tell you what she is going to say before she opened her mouth. And after she spoke ... those wonderful eyes and her body would enforce that statement before the next person could follow-up with their line. There were also those times when the script did not call for a spoken response that her eyes and body motions told chapters. I thought she handled the religious aspects of the story in a very delicate manner that once almost brought me to tears. Renee' once said in an interview that she and Lucy always tried to be present when the other one was filming their lines because they could build off each others emotion. Unfortunately DeKay just doesn't seem to have the ability as an actor to emit emotion and he sure as hell is not the next Harrison Ford ... so she had to work it out on her own.

The journeymen actors were just that, journeymen actors, but they did a good job and did not detract from the story. Tommy Lester who played the Major could have toned it down a tad, but that may just may be me because I don't like overbearing men. Also someone should have told him that when in action ... you strap on a helmet ... even if you are an officer and your bloody head is shaved.

SUMMARY:
Sci-Fi has redeemed themselves, in my book, for that god awful AA, by putting Renee' in the staring role of 'Monster Ark'. And gang, if any of you missed watching it tonight, BE SURE TO WATCH IT THE NEXT TIME IT IS ON!
It's a damn good flick!

"Renee' ... Good on You Mate!"

"My impure thoughts have gone way beyond inanimate objects"

"Bitch Slap" is a post-modern, thinking man's throwback to the "B" Movie/Exploitation films of the 1950's - 70's as well as a loving, sly parody of same. "Bitch Slap" mixes hot girls, fast cars, big guns, nasty tongues, outrageous action and jaw-dropping eye candy with a message… don't be naughty! At its core, "Bitch Slap" follows three bad girls; one a down-and-out stripper; one a drug-running killer; and the third a corporate power broker, as they arrive at a remote desert hideaway to extort massive booty from a ruthless underworld.

They are forced to confront a villain much worse than they ever expected… themselves. It's the ultimate morality tale as, one by one, they realize the whole "she-bang" was a set-up and one of the film's characters may not even be human. What makes "Bitch Slap" different is a "B" Story device that runs throughout the film to illuminate character, back story and relationship histories not previously revealed. "Bitch Slap" also employs a mysterious Female Narrator who comments periodically on the folly of humanity, the plight of the human condition and the vagaries of life and love through quoting the likes of Dostoevsky, T.S. Eliot, Sun Tzu and even Buddha.

Director: Rick Jacobson - Cast: Julia Voth, Erin Cummings, America Olivo, Michael Hurst, Ron Melendez, William Gregory Lee, Scott Hanley, Kevin Sorbo, Dennis Keiffer, Lucy Lawless, Renee O'Connor, Mark Lutz, Debbie Lee Carrington, Zoe Bell, Bianca Barnett

Now in post-production B/S is scheduled for DVD release Christmas 2008. A great "STOCKING STUFFER" for all the kiddies!
